یکی از پیامدهای ناگوار کاهش بارندگی در بخش کشاورزی، پدیده شوری خاک است. بدیهی است این شوری، در کیفیت و کمیت محصولات زراعی تاثیرگذار خواهد بود. استفاده از روش های به زراعی و مواد اصلاح کننده، راه مقابله با این معضل می باشد. گچ کشاورزی یکی از مواد اصلاح کننده خاک است که علاوه بر کمک به کاهش شوری خاک، تاثیرات شگفت انگیز دیگری نیز خواهد داشت.

گچ ساختمانی حاصل پخت و آسیاب سنگ گچ است. پودر گچ در مجاورت آب، ضمن جذب آن سخت می گردد. لذا به عنوان یک پوشش نسبتا مستحکم جهت سطوح ساختمانی قابل استفاده می باشد.
اما گچ کشاورزی همان پودر گچ خام است که حلالیت متوسط در آب داشته و در مجاورت آب سخت و کلوخه ای نمی شود. بلکه به خروج سدیم اضافی از خاک کمک می کند.

زمان افزودن گچ کشاورزی به خاک بستگی به نوع محصول و درصد شوری خاک دارد. در واقع هر زمان که امکان غرقاب زمین وجود داشته باشد، می توان از این ماده اصلاحی استفاده کرد. لازم به ذکر است در اغلب موارد، در فصل پاییز و زمستان که هنگام خواب درختان و گیاهان می باشد، نسبت به عملیات گچ پاشی اقدام می شود.
